Guglielmo und Ferrando sind zwei Offiziere des Neapolitanischen Heeres. Sie sitzen zusammen im Kaffee mit Ihrem Freund der alte Philosoph Don Alfonso. Die beiden jungen Männer schwärmen von ihren Verlobten und besingen deren Treue zu Ihnen. Don Alfonso, der durch das Leben zynisch geworden ist, behauptet, kein Mädchen sei ewig treu. Er sagt, bei der Treue der Frauen sei es wie beim Phoenix, alle reden davon, doch niemand habe ihn je gesehen. Die beiden jungen Männer sind entrüstet und fordern ein Duell. Worauf Alfonso ihnen eine Wette anbietet. Don Alfonso besticht die Haushälterin Despina, damit sie beim Spiel mitmacht. Ferrando und Guglielmo treten als Albaner verkleidet ein und versuchen die beiden schönen Damen. Fiordiligi und Dorabella zu verführen. Die Komödie nimmt Ihrem Lauf. Am Ende der Oper Don Alfonso arrangiert eine Doppeltrauung mit Despina verkleidet als Notar. Kaum ist die Tinte unter dem Ehevertrag trocken, kündigt sich die überraschende Ankunft der Offiziere an. Die beiden Herren fliehen und die beiden Frauen müssen den beiden Rückkehrer beschämt alles gestehen. Mit einem grandiosen Schluss-Ensemble endet dieses großartige musikalische Komödie von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Guglielmo and Ferrando are two officers in the Neapolitan army. They are sitting together in a coffee shop with their friend, the old philosopher Don Alfonso. The two young men rave about their fiancées and sing of their loyalty to them. Don Alfonso, who has become cynical through life, claims that no girl is ever faithful. He says that women's fidelity is like the Phoenix, everyone talks about it, but no one has ever seen it. The two young men are indignant and demand a duel. Alfonso offers them a bet. Don Alfonso bribes the housekeeper Despina to take part in the game. Ferrando and Guglielmo enter disguised as Albanians and tempt the two beautiful ladies. Fiordiligi and Dorabella. The comedy takes its course. At the end of the opera, Don Alfonso arranges a double wedding with Despina disguised as a notary. As soon as the ink is dry on the marriage contract, the surprise arrival of the officers is announced. The two gentlemen flee and the two women are ashamed to confess everything to the two returnees. This magnificent musical comedy by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ends with a magnificent final ensemble.
